John operates in the fields of business analysis (passenger and freight), demand forecasting, economic benefit assessment, timetable planning and diagramming, resource planning and stakeholder consultation. John has forty years experience of railway passenger and freight business management, as well as planning and marketing. From 1982 to 1994 he was responsible for the bottom line of British Rail freight business sub-sectors with multi-million pound turnovers. He then moved to the passenger sector as product manager and later strategy manager for TransPennine Express. From 2001 to 2004 John was responsible for revenue forecasting and operations planning as a member of the Arriva franchise bidding team. This included successful bids for franchises in Wales and Denmark. In 2005 John set up John Headon Ltd and now operates as an independent consultant, working in franchise bidding in the UK and other rail-related projects for clients such as Stagecoach Rail, Arup, National Express, Lloyds Register Rail, Transport for London and RWA Rail. On behalf of Arup he wrote several chapters of the Regional Planning Assessments for Thames Valley and the South West, published by the DfT in May/June 2007.

John Headon has forty years experience working in the United Kingdom with British Rail at a senior level, post-privatisation TOCs and Franchise Bidders. He now operates his own successful rail consultancy - John Headon Limited. John was the inaugural Chairman of the Rail Passenger Demand Forecasting Council, and is now an associate of PDFC. John is a member of the Institution of Railway Operators, the Institute of Logistics and Transport and a member of the Independent Rail Consultancy Group (IRCG).
